91 points "The Clot de l’Oum 2007 Cotes du Roussillon Cine-Panetonne represents a field blend of (in descending order) Grenache Gris, Carignan Blanc, Grenache Blanc, and Macabeu, and a smidgeon of Muscat, grown on mica-schist at altitudes of 1,500-1,800 feet, and raised in second- and third-year barrique. In theory, these varieties should ripen at different times. But, in a claim that echoes Jean-Michel Deiss, Monne insists that here they ripen and are picked together. It’s hard to argue with the results! The vineyard was planted right after the Second World War, and the former owner told Monne that a German prisoner of war did the work. Monne found evidence that the schist had been painstakingly broken into smaller fragments around the vines: perhaps the prisoner was from the Mosel. Narcissus, musk, sage, lime zest, and alkaline mineral notes rise from the glass. In the mouth, this boasts considerable richness – even a subtle creaminess – yet transparency, energy, and brightness as well; underlain by nut oils and a saline, subtly meaty savor; and leading to a long and invigorating finish with what I can only call “shimmering minerality.” I am sure this will keep well for at least several years, and probably become even more ravishing.
