"The smoky, floral-scented 2003 Syrah White Hawk Vineyard (a vineyard planted in primarily sandy soils) is a brilliant effort. Aromas of creosote, tar, smoked game, and huge quantities of black fruits jump from the glass of this beauty. There is plenty of tannin, depth, complexity, and length in this terroir-driven Syrah. Give it 2-3 more years of cellaring, and enjoy it over the following 15+.
I was not able to taste through the full line-up of Ojai’s 2004 Syrahs, but I did see barrel samples of the Bien Nacido, Thompson Vineyard, White Hawk Vineyard, and Roll Ranch. They all appear to be sensational Syrahs with distinctive extroverted aromatic profiles and concentrated palates. It should be another highly successful vintage for Adam Tolmach, who has not missed a beat since he began making Syrah at the Ojai Vineyard in 1983.

"From a cool site, the 2002 Syrah White Hawk Vineyard possesses elegant, Crozes-Hermitage-like scents of camphor, Asian spices, minerals, tobacco, and black currants. While dense, medium to full-bodied, and restrained, it is a pretty albeit differently-styled Syrah that should drink well for 8-10 years."
