" A soft and delicious blend of old- and young-vine Zins from the backside of Mt. Diablo, the 2002 Oakley shows robust color with a bouquet reminiscent of rich plums, ripe cherries and chocolate. The flavors are dark blackberry, cherry and cassis with hints of chocolate and spice. This wine is a blend of the above-mentioned zin along with old carignane, petite sirah and mourvedre vines found growing alongside in the old school tradition. Many of these vines are over 100 years of age, planted in sloping, sandy and well-drained soil. The Phyloxera louse does not like sand and thus many of these vines survived the epidemic of the early 1900s. This "ancient" vineyard (part of the San Francisco Bay appellation) is dry farmed, virtually without irrigation."
