Those who've sampled Spencer Roloson's Tempranillo grown just north of Mount St. Helena in the very northern reaches of the Monticello Range might indeed say, yes! Sam Spencer and Wendy Roloson make use of the ideal terrior (this is a seriously steep and very rocky vineyard) and the Ribera del Duero selection of Tempranillo to make a wine with monumental structure and inky black fruit. Aged in Allier and Vosges barrels (20% new), this is a powerhouse wine very much in a California style with big, though integrated tannins and a touch of Spanish earthiness and finesse."
