"Most Americans have never been exposed to the joys of wines from the Jura located in the eastern corner of France. However visiting this terrain through the wines of the great master, Jacques Puffeney, is the preferred way to enter this fascinating part of the world of wine. Puffeney's approximately 15 hectares of vineyard holdings are planted to Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau and Pinot Noir. For the reds, the Poulsard experiences a 15 to 20 day cuvaison while the Pinot Noir and the Trousseau undergo at least a 3 week cuvaison. They are then racked into foudres (not new) where the malolactic fermentation takes place. The reds are aged at least two years and sometimes 30 months in barrel depending upon the structure of the vintage. The 2002 "Vielles Vignes" is a blend of all three red varietals from the oldest vignes on the property. This Jurassian red (nearly rose in color) is long, cool and elegant with notes of tea, wild raspberry, red beet and cassis. what a lovely introduction to the wines of the Jura! Enjoy with smoked duck or seared ahi tuna! "

3.5 stars "Pale red color, distinctive nose with notes of tart cherry, dried flowers and spices. On the palate, dry, refreshing, almost like a rosé, very light."
