"Blockbuster Châteauneuf--rich and thick yet loyal to local customs with its traditional emphasis on plum, leather, wet earth, cedar, tobacco, coffee and mineral. A wine like none other--and unhindered by some modernistic oak treatment. Fabulously authentic stuff. Drink now through 2020. 830 cases made. (PM)"

"96-100 points: The 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes had a few degrees of residual sugar to ferment out. It is a blend of 85% Grenache and the balance split between Syrah and Mourvedre. A wine of exraordinary intensity and the potential to garner a perfect score, this inky/purple-colored effort boasts an exceptional nose of black raspberries, creme de cassis, melted licorice, and earth. Extremely full-bodied, with a multi-dimensional, super-concetrated palate, fabulous purity, and over 15% alcohol, it is a classic Chateauneuf du Pape meant for long-term cellaring. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020"

"Inky purple. Intense blackberry and raspberry preserve aromas show great depth and ripeness - no surprise, as Sabon told me that components of this are over 17.4% alcohol. Lush, creamy and almost liqueur-like in sweetness, but with good acid lift to the ripe boysenberry and blackberry flavors. Tannins sneak in on the back but are overwhelmed by the sheer weight of fruit. Stains the palate with dark fruit flavors. This was one of the highlights of my trip."
