"I might have over-rated this before. The bottle I had tonight seemed to be significantly over-oaked, or so I thought."

"Deep dark red (not as purple as the Tatty Road), with smoky, savoury,
bitter chocolate, cherry and earth aromas and tarry, savoury, spicy flavours
with blackberries plums and meaty tannins. A departure from the typical
flamboyant McLaren Vale style, this meaty tannined wine is more earthy
and brooding and seems to lack some punch. Matured in French and
American oak for 12 months. With only a 10 to 15-year projected cellaring
potential, they say it’s made in a ‘less serious’ style. Gold Medal San
Francisco 2007."

"This is one of those cases that proves a high-alcohol wine can be smooth
and delicious, thanks to great winemaking. At 14.5% alcohol, I think most
would classify Gemtree Vineyards 2006 Bloodstone Shiraz in that category,
but unless you looked at the label, you’d never know - and especially for
such a young wine!"

"Crisp and juicy, with a broad swath of currant and blackberry fruit filling
the mouth, framed by a layer of fine tannins. "

"This screwcapped-sealed red is initially a bit dumb and simple on opening,
but with several hours of air it begins to come to life. It’s a rich Aussie
Shiraz, but there’s a bit more to it than just sweet fruit and oak. The nose
shows attractive pepper spice, a hint of vanilla and bright, fresh raspberry
and dark cherry fruit. The palate is fresh with nice tannic structure and vivid
sweet red and black fruits. It’s certainly a big wine that’s sweetly fruited,
but it doesn’t descend into a sweet fruit mush – there’s enough spicy,
peppery freshness to act as a counter. The result is very appealing, but do
give it time"

"Sweet, generous, lush, concentrated, balanced and integrated are all
descriptors that come to mind when this wine enters your mouth.
With flavours of violets, red cherries, crème brulee, blackberry, forest floor,
paprika, aniseed and sweet spice- nutmeg. Pair with beef."

"Welcome back old friend –It’s been a while since we’ve stocked this label.
Sourced from a combination of Gemtree’s oldest vineyard on Tatachilla
Road and the home block, this is archetypal McLaren Vale Shiraz.
Aromas and flavours of violets, red currants, forest floor, blueberries, plums,
liquorice, aniseed, sweet spice- nutmeg combine on a generous, well
weighted palate, with plenty there to ensure many more years of drinking if
you require."

"Winemaker Mike Brown (who has previously made d’Arenberg’s Dead
Arm Shiraz) believes in minimal intervention in the wine making process,
leaving the work in the vineyard to determine the character of the wine - and
what a personality this wine has! Exclusive to Oddbins in the UK, the
Bloodstone reflects the warm conditions in the McLaren Vale, leading to a
very intense fruit driven style.
Tasting Notes : An in-your-face meaty and spicy nose has aromas of smoky
bacon and black forest gateau. The palate has flavours of dried fruit and
boysenberries, moving onto a herby and savoury finish via a dry
cranberriness and a touch of vanilla. Full bodied and long with no
noticeable tannins."

"Mike Brown of Gemtree Vineyards has also sold wine to Oddbins. Like
Linda, he’s based in the McLaren Vale, just south of Adelaide, and he’s also
a perfectionist.
His operation is much bigger, and since 2006 has been certified as one of
the few biodynamic (super-organic) operations in the region.
“As we began to convert to biodynamic, I’ve noticed that the fruit has
ripened earlier and with a better, fuller flavour. The tannins are also more
mature.Mike’s Bloodstone Shiraz 06 (£9.99 at Oddbins) has lovely, spicy, toasty
black fruit, balanced by clean acidity,…"

"The 2006 growing season was remembered for a cool spring with excellent
rains that enabled the vineyards to retain their natural balance, resulting in
great acidity and wonderful structure. This wine exhibits balance and
integration not common in wines so youthful. Gemtree sourced Bloodstone
Shiraz from a combination of their oldest vineyard on Tatachilla Road and
from Gemtree’s home block. Bloodstone is open fermented for 10 days then
gently pressed into French and American oak for 12 months. An absoloute
cracker."

"Gemtree Bloodstone Shiraz follows the brief of previous vintages- soft,
fruitful, with good length and intensity. Some complementary spice is in
evidence. Has just won a gold in San Francisco- adjudged top wine of 548
submitted …screwcap"

"An explosion of sweet violets and red berry fruits explode on the front
palate. The flavour profile builds through the mid palate where a remarkable
backbone of acidity carries the flavours of red fleshy fruits, anise and
licorice. The finish of fine persistent tannin and overlying generosity give
this wine the legs to run the distance"

"Sourced from this family estate’s oldest vineyards, the Bloodstone Shiraz is
bursting with violets, blueberries, plum, spice and earthy aromas. It’s full-
bodied with plush red berry flavours balanced by a good backbone of acidity
and fine tannins. Great now, it can also be cellared for 3-5 years."
