"Color: dark; Nose: fragrant; Acidity: supple; Body: firm; Finish: medium; Having been through this DO in 2007 I decdided to take a chance on a new Spanish red from the up and coming Ribera Del Duero region. I researched the Martin Berdugo Bodega and found out that it is a recently formed family-run estate of only 84 hectares under vine. The estate benefits from a gravelly, pebbled soil, not disimilar to Chateauneuf-du-Pape's famous soils. This allows excellent drainage and warmer than typical evening termperatures.
Everything is done to maximise flavour: for example, only 10 bunches are left on each vine, to concentrate the fruit. All harvesting is done by hand to ensure that every bunch is in peak condition. The winemaking philosophy is that quality and wine-personality begin in the vineyard.
Martin Berdugo focus on fruit-driven wines so there is no Reserva or Gran Reserva. The top wine; Crianza, spends a year in new oak barrels, this adds a beautiful vanilla aroma and flavour to the already concentrated, fine, complex wine. Soft, red-berry flavours combine with the oak to produce a wine that is an ideal match for roasted red-meat dishes.
This wine was fantastic with the vanilla and oak tastes dancing on my pallet. I will be back to Total Wine to pick up a case of this fine wine. Highly recommended.
